It is encouraged and recommended to bring your mobile device(s) to these classes, so that you can follow along using them. There are several classes where LDS-specific sites and technology will be discussed, so an LDS.org account is also recommended. If you do not have one, you can create by clicking here. You will need your Membership Record Number, which is on your temple recommend, or you can get it from your ward clerk.
Defining appropriate use of technology for your family
When is your child ready to have a cell phone? What rules should your family have for the Xbox, or should you even have one? How much time is too much time to spend on Facebook, or the Internet in general? These are just some of the many questions that parents face today. There are two things that make this even more challenging.
1. While the “one size fits all” parenting technique is frequently used, it can have negative effects on some children. Each child is different, and technology gives parents the opportunity – or forces them, depending on your perspective – to take those differences into consideration. This can take considerably more time and effort; however, technology can also help to reduce that.
2. Technology is constantly changing. The Internet is – actually it already has – brought formerly disparate technologies together. Additionally, younger people usually learn how to use new technologies much faster than older people. How can parents keep up with these changes?
While this presentation will touch on current and upcoming technologies, the focus will be on how to gain enough of an understanding of them to know how to determine age-appropriateness of various technologies as well as how and when it is appropriate to use different devices, websites, activities, applications, etc.
Protecting Loved Ones on the Internet
It seems that almost all the news about what happens on the Internet is bad. Scams, stalkers, child predators, identity theft and pornography are just a few of the frequent leads in news reports. With so much wickedness on the Internet, how do you avoid it and protect yourself and your family?
This presentation will cover the many options for providing that protection, as well as discuss the shortcomings of those methods. From Internet filters to firewalls, monitoring services to security suites, this presentation is designed to give you insight that can be used to protect your family from many of the dangers on the Internet, while allowing you to take advantage of the blessing of having positive, wholesome information readily available.
Apps That Help Us Draw Closer to Christ
An incredible number of applications are being developed every day. This class will give us the opportunity to learn what "apps" can help us draw closer to The Savior. There are many apps, both those targeted for Latter-day Saints and not, that can be used or combined to help us with everything from home/visiting teaching to planning better Family Home Evenings or keeping the little ones quieter in Sacrament Meeting. We won't have time to cover them all in depth, but we will quickly get you acquainted with them and then provide their names and links for you to research them after the Conference has concluded. And if we don't cover some of your favorite apps, share them with us and we'll put them on the Conference Website as well.
Intro to Technology
This course will provide a quick overview of the available technologies, helping you
to match your needs and wants with the available technology. What kind of computer should I get? What should it come with? Do I get a desktop, I-Pad, Tablet, laptop or notebook? How do I connect my device to the Internet? My
computer is not as fast as it used to be –what happened? Tips and tricks on using your web browser and email.
Using Family Tree
The class will be an introduction to Family Search Family Tree, including its purpose, accessing it, navigating Family Tree, and finding help. We will demonstrate using it and try to answer questions about problems we might encounter. Family Tree will soon be replacing newFamilySearch and at that point it will be essential to anyone trying to provide temple ordinances for deceased family members. It's also fun, and sometimes frustrating, to see the information about your family that is already on Family Tree.
Indexing
This will be an introduction to the HOW and WHY of Indexing, a way to forward the work of salvation, even if all you have to offer is a few minutes of your time.
If you have previously done extraction work ... Indexing is for you! If you've never done any extraction work, but can read and type... Indexing is for you! If you don't have the time or know-how to get involved in doing your own family history research yet ... Indexing is for you! If you think your family history is already "done" and there's nothing further for you to do ... Indexing is for you!
If you download the Indexing software (from familysearch.org) on your computer ahead of time, you will be at the "head of the class." You will need an LDS Account and are encouraged (but not required) to have it set up ahead of time. You are welcome to bring your laptop. We will have some computers available for your use.
NOTE ESPECIALLY FOR YOUTH: The Lord has a great work for YOU to do! Your amazing technological ability can be put to great use in forwarding the work of the Lord through Indexing! Come join us! No promises, but I'll try to go light on the "homework." :)
Using LDS.org
Get a general overview of the LDS Church’s Website and hopefully find the desire to learn that there is so much more than meets the eye. The Church has always been progressive in their approach to technology. Come and find out some of the great resources that are available to members of the Church as well as the general public looking for information. Come and learn how to better use the wealth of Church information available to you.
Wholesome Social Media Use
There are many different types of social media, and most of the focus is in a negative light. In this class we will introduce some of the larger types of social media (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Blogger, etc) and how we can use social media to draw us closer to the Savior.
